Growing a skilled and diverse rail workforce

Australia’s rail network is transforming as governments invest $155 billion to expand and modernise the country’s networks.

Over the next 15 years an extra 70,000 workers will be needed to build, run and maintain these investments.

This includes traditional roles such as signallers, welders, electricians and train drivers. As well as new skills in areas such as robotics, cyber technology, human factors, data analytics and transport planning.

The Hub is working with governments, industry and the education sector to grow these skills. And find better ways to:

  • attract more women and young people into the sector
  • train workers in the hi-tech, digital and traditional skills that rail needs
  • ensure rail skills training and qualifications are recognised across sectors and around the country.

Why choose a job in rail?

Rail offers more than a job. It offers a pathway to a career that can be as dynamic and diverse as you want it to be. You can move up in your chosen profession, or switch direction and try something new.

Along the way you will develop skills that are appreciated around the globe.

We spoke to people working in Australia’s rail industry and asked them why they
chose a career in rail and what their experience has been.
