Australia's rail workforce is ageing. By 2035, 35 percent of today's workers will have reached retirement age. This will put even greater pressure on an industry which already needs another 70,000 people to build and run $150 billion of investment over the coming decade.

The National Transport Commission (NTC) is working with the Australasian Railways Association (ARA) to address this looming talent shortage by developing strategies to attract and retain a younger generation of rail workers.

On 21 June 2023, 62 young rail employees representing diverse organisations and roles from across Australia gathered online for the webinar, Attracting a new generation of rail talent. Led by the ARA's Young Leaders Advisory board (Y-LAB), the event asked participants to help identify better ways to promote rail to a new generation.
