Identifying common operating rules

We're working with the Australasian Railway Association (ARA) and Industry Skills Australia (ISA) to harmonise operating rules and reduce the need for bespoke training.
Background

Common operating rules and practices

Australia’s rail system is made up of 18 separate networks. Every network has different role titles, infrastructure, technology and equipment.

This has led to variations in operating rules. And to networks developing their own unique training and assessment procedures.

While these procedures share many elements in common, training is not mutually recognised. So, workers often must be retrained and assessed to work on different networks.

This is expensive, complicated and increases the risk of human error impacting safety.

The NTC is working with the Australasian Railway Association (ARA) and Industry Skills Australia (ISA) to identify common operating rules and practices that will reduce the need for bespoke training.

To start with, we’re collaborating with organisations across the rail industry to develop a list of common safeworking terms, worker roles and titles. As well as national standards for signage, hand signals and personal protective equipment (PPE).
