Establishing an Efficient Freight Transport Network

Rail freight produces 16 times less carbon pollution than road freight and is an important means for achieving the Australian Government’s carbon emissions reduction targets. So why does rail continue to struggle to win market share on some of the nation’s busiest freight routes?

In its 2023 study, The Future of Freight, the Australasian Centre for Rail Innovation (ACRI) has identified five priority areas for action as well as range of action plans and strategies to improve:

• targeted infrastructure investment

• supply chain efficiency

• planning, coordination and regulation

 • freight location and performance data

The study was prepared with significant input from the Freight on Rail Group (FORG) and the Australasian Railway Association (ARA), and support from the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications and the Arts.
